Abstract

Despite recent research efforts on urban mobility practices in Latin America, there is still the need to advance our understanding of mobility-related equity and justice from three dimensions: mobile identities, spaces of mobility, and mobility as a public problem. Research on mobile identities takes into account different roles as mobile subjects and differential conditions of disability and accessibility, and so on. Research on spaces of mobility deepens our understanding of the spatialities that individuals produce on a daily basis through different strategies of movement through time and space. Finally, research on mobility as a public problem contributes to understanding the social construction of urban mobility as an object of public policy and action. We argue that expanding understanding on these three dimensions is a step to overcoming the dichotomies between qualitative and quantitative methods, while offering an opportunity to further explore the relationship between spatial arrangements of cities and citizens’ mobility practices and experiences.
