Abstract

It is anecdotally believed that a high proportion of crystal structures solved and refined to a standard suitable for publication remain unpublished. Publication of structures is in the public interest for addition to the compiled body of crystallographic knowledge and for the availability of relevant information for the work of other researchers, and should be regarded as an ethical responsibility in the case of public research funding. Possible reasons for the failure to publish are examined, as well as reasons why some crystal structures should not be published. The opportunities for putting structural results into the public domain in a range of forms of ‘publication’ are explored.
