Abstract

The current literature on blockchain-based technologies pays little attention to the perceived benefits of blockchains, even though they are critical for users. To address this gap, this study explores the innovation and privacy attributes of blockchains affecting their adoption. To test the hypothesised relationships, the study recruits 506 respondents. The analysis of the paths offered evidence about the significant effect of relative advantage, observability, compatibility, complexity and perceived security when it comes to adopting blockchain-based services. This evidence contributes to the understanding of users’ perspectives on blockchain adoption by exploring innovation-specific factors, which have not been researched before. In turn, these findings can inform practitioners about the aspects of the blockchain and user behaviour that should be considered while developing and marketing the technology.
