Abstract

This project resource provides a comprehensive Assurance of Learning Rubric designed to assess and enhance PhD researchers' progress across key academic and professional competencies. The rubric operationalises three high-level learning goals - research effectiveness, collaboration, and career readiness - to align with diverse PhD programme structures, from coursework-intensive to flexible, individualised pathways. Grounded in established frameworks such as the UKRI ESRC Postgraduate Training Guidelines and the Vitae Researcher Development Framework, the rubric offers measurable objectives and adaptable dimensions to support tracking progress from research proposal to thesis defence. By integrating clear criteria for creativity, communication, and career preparedness, this resource serves as a valuable tool for supervisors, institutions, and researchers to ensure consistent development and readiness for both academic and industry careers. This adaptable framework aims to advance PhD learning outcomes and facilitate meaningful evaluations, contributing to the ongoing improvement of doctoral education globally.
