The Paulhus Deception Scale (PDS) is a self-report tool which assesses two types of deception: self-deceptive enhancement (SDE) and impression management (IM). Whilst extensively used in research and practice, no psychometric critique assesses its suitability with forensic populations. Accurate deception measurement is crucial for clinicians and forensic psychologists involved in assessment and treatment. This review finds some support for the PDS's applicability, but highlights significant gaps when compared to its predecessor, the Balanced Inventory of Desirable Responding (BIDR). Practical implications and future research are also discussed.
