This chapter explores ethnographic approaches to the study of ageing through time, across a variety of cultural settings and across disciplines. It contextualises ethnographic principles as based on participant observation, originating in anthropology and premised on a particular research perspective. This perspective is, namely empathy with the ‘other’ and a willingness to be open to ways of doing and being that are unfamiliar to the researcher. The chapter also considers what strengths and challenges are brought via ethnography towards a fuller understanding of socio-cultural ageing processes and the experiences of older people themselves
