Charles Butler's The Feminine Monarchy, first published in 1609, then in two further editions in 1623 and 1634 contains numerous references to sound and listening as both a diagnostic technique, and as a mode of knowledge. In this short chapter the varied instances in which sound is identified as significant and identified, and the contexts within which they carried meaning are explored.
