Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group. The second Trump administration in the United States has brought with it a cascade of changes and ruptures to the international order. The liberal, post-World War 2 consensus appears increasingly under threat in favour of a more Thucydidean view of the world. This short intervention article offers a way of understanding some of the emerging shifts and points of rupture in the first few months of the second Trump term, and spaces for response, by highlighting the ways in which they signify gendered understandings of security and defence. Focusing on the ways in which military readiness and operational effectiveness are understood through such a gendered lens, this intervention serves as a springboard for conversations between scholars and security actors for how to understand and meet this moment.
