There are few systematic studies of the impact of intergenerational contact between preschool-aged children and older adults in residential settings. This qualitative study explored the perceived impact of an intergenerational project bringing together preschoolers and residents at an assisted living facility in the North of England. Perceptions were explored through semi-structured interviews with residents and staff at the assisted-living facility, parents of preschool-aged children, and early-years educators. Data were analyzed thematically. The findings suggest benefits for the health and wellbeing of both children and older adults, offer insights into the learning opportunities afforded by unstructured intergenerational interactions, and illustrate the dynamics of interpersonal bonds between the age groups. Some of the challenges of carrying out an intergeneration project of this kind are discussed in relation to implications for policy and practice.
