While the era of AI has captured global spotlight, the critical yet often hidden factors of its competitiveness lie in semiconductor microchips, which serve as the backbone of almost all modern technologies including AI. In an increasingly VUCA global world marked by escalating geopolitical tensions, rising economic nationalism, tech cold war and supply chain disruptions, semiconductor MNEs are facing serious challenges. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a theoretical foundation that enables semiconductor MNEs to advance in such intensifying global chip race. The chapter aims to fill in the existing international business literature gap by provide insights to: i. understand the role of chip manufacturing in the global race of AI; ii. focusing on the case of one of the most successful semiconductor multinational, TSMC, entering to Japan given the global techno-geopolitical risks; and iii. the lessons learnt from IB’s strategic responses in such VUCA landscape and implications for other MNEs in the global semiconductor industry to navigate and race in this great chip war.
