Open Access padlockePrints

The Newcastle University research output collection, currently available on ePrints, will shortly be moving to a new open repository platform, Figshare. To prepare for the data migration we have paused adding new content to ePrints, and will resume once the new repository is launched. During this time you will continue to have access to ePrints (but no new content will appear). We will share updates here when available.

Abstract

The Urban Prefigurations platform - accessible at urbanpref.com - is a digital space created to showcase and connect grassroots urban movements. It explores how communities enact alternative urban futures through prefigurative politics, meaning they build the kind of society they want to live in through present-day practices. The platform serves several key purposes: Documentation: It hosts a series of short films and a feature-length documentary that capture real-life urban struggles, such as housing rights, informal settlements, and community organising. Knowledge Sharing: It provides resources and reflections from activists, researchers, and community members, encouraging critical dialogue around urban justice and the “right to the city.” Engagement: It invites users to explore, learn from, and contribute to ongoing urban mobilizations, fostering transnational solidarity and collaboration. The platform is designed to be accessible and visually engaging, making complex social issues understandable to a broad audience. It blends academic insight with lived experience, offering unique perspectives on how cities can be reshaped from the bottom up.
