Immunisation Coverage for Measles Vaccine in Romania and Hungary: A Comparative Analysis

Abstract

Background: Measles, a vaccine-preventable disease, remains a concern in the WHO European Region, with 61,070 cases and 13 deaths reported by 41 WHO European countries. Almost half of these cases occurred in children less than five years old, with over three-quarters of these children unvaccinated against measles. In 2023, Romania recorded 3497 measles cases and three deaths, while Hungary recorded just one measles case, although both countries share some similarities. Aims: This study investigated the percentage coverage of the measles vaccine in Hungary and Romania over a period of 14 years. Methods: The WHO Global Health Observatory database (last updated: 12th July 2024) was investigated on March 1st, 2025, for measles-containing-vaccine first (MCV1) and second (MCV2) doses. Data from 2010 to date was extracted, analysed and visualised using Power BI. Results: Hungary recorded 99% coverage for MCV1 and MCV2 throughout the period under review, while the percentage coverage for MCV1 and MCV2 in Romania has steadily declined since 2010. The highest percentage coverage for MCV1 (95%) and MCV2 (93%) in Romania was in 2010, while the lowest percentage coverage for MCV1 (78%) and MCV2 (62%) was in 2023.Conclusions: MCV1 and MCV2 percentage coverage in Romania fell below the 95% coverage recommended by the WHO. While the causes of low vaccination coverage and higher measles cases and deaths in Romania compared to Hungary may be complex, improving the percentage coverage for measles vaccines in Romania, either through localised outreaches and other forms of healthcare programming, would contribute to reducing the measles burden among Romanian children.
