Maritime transport is pivotal to the global economy, with ships handling around 90% of world trade. Diesel engines, as the main power source for vessels, have a significant impact on the environment. A comparison of different diesel engines in terms of energy efficiency using the heat balance for various operational profiles would provide a basis for the selection of propulsion engines. A data-driven model based on Sankey diagrams was proposed, and an energy-flow-based method for the comparison and selection of diesel engines was introduced. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed model and method, different engine models, cylinder diameters, and cylinder numbers under similar power ranges were selected for comparison in this study. When providing similar power with the same number of cylinders, increasing the cylinder diameter resulted in higher shaft power efficiency, with an increase of more than 1 %. Similarly, reducing the number of cylinders for the same cylinder diameter also showed improved shaft power efficiency of approximately 1 %. The results can serve as a valuable reference for selecting more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly diesel engines. Additionally, analysing heat losses in diesel engine energy flow identifies areas for enhancement, ultimately leading to enhanced energy efficiency in ships.
