This study explores the impact of firm-level entrepreneurship on innovation performance. It also examines how the search of external knowledge for innovative activities moderates the effect of entrepreneurship on innovation. Integrating the theoretical views of entrepreneurial orientation, knowledge exploration and exploitation, and open innovation, it proposes a U-shaped relationship between entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and innovation performance. It also proposes that the depth of external knowledge and the novelty of innovation moderate the relationship between EO and innovation. For example, the U-shaped relationship is more pronounced when external knowledge search is deeper and innovation novelty is higher. It finds empirical evidence supporting both a U-shaped effect of EO on innovation performance and moderating roles of innovation novelty and external knowledge depth by analyzing the data offirms in the Korean manufacturing industries.
