Abstract

This paper addresses a key issue, yet a neglected area of local policy and research i.e., the ‘gender management gap’ in the scientific labour market in the North East of England. Based on the empirical survey of sixty scientific SMEs, operating in the North East of England, the paper compares and contrasts the ownership and management structure between female and male. The results show that the North East under-performance in terms of scientific activities such as innovation and R&D and availability of highly qualified labour is also apparent in the participation of women in the scientific managerial labour market. Women, who make up around half of the population, are predominantly under-represented in the scientific managerial labour market in the North East of England and, as such, SMEs and the region as a whole may be missing out on a fundamental mean of increasing their competitive strengths.
