This report arises from a case study of a school serving a social housing estate. As families were increasingly housed on the estate on the basis of 'need', the school found itself facing a range of learning and bahaviour difficulties in its pupils with which it felt unable to cope. Housing and Schooling charts strategies adopted by the school and by the estate's landlord in their attempts to address this situation, setting out both their failures and successes. It suggests that registered social landlords need to be more aware of how their lettings policies impact on local schools and argues for an extension of 'Housing Plus' to incorporate issues related to schooling. However, it also argues caution for landlords, suggesting that they have to be wary of becoming front-line providers of education services. Instead, they should act as advocates for the communities they serve, helping schools to understand the changes in those communities and locking them into wider multi-agancy strategies.
