Abstract

Based on archive material from the island of Sylt, this video investigates the construction of history through the use of narrative devices derived from cinema. It combines a reflection on the medium of video with an exploration of recording and transportation devices (the camera / the train) which are central to an understanding of German history.

Notes: In 2003 'Kurlichspiele' was selected by a panel of seven judges for ‘40jahrevideokunst.de’, a definitive national collection of video art in Germany (since 1963). The collection forms the basis of a series of exhibitions, a comprehensive catalogue and a DVD study edition of the history of video art in Germany. This permanent collection will be promoted internationally by the Goethe Institute, and includes work by Samuel Beckett, Joseph Beuys, Robert Wilson, Rebecca Horn, Rosemarie Trockel and Nam June Paik.
