This article, which will be translated into English, is a polemic essay about the role of the genius in Finnish architecture. The old masters operate as liminal signs of the verge of the profession. Because they are established as geniuses after their death, there is no need to follow them. The organic architecture is circumscribed with the admiration, which shows the limits of every day design practices. The new post-modern heroes are those, which are capable of transforming the localities towards universal values by applying modern clichés. Especially the author of NOKIA head quarters, architect Pekka Helin is discussed as a protagonist and genius on this hyper modern stage. He is establishing his role as a most prominent architect of our time by referring to Aalto, but not following him in his design. Thus “Aalto” operates as a signal of the knowledge and prestige. The dichotomy rational and irrational is discussed in more detail.
