Notes: 8,000 words; commissioned by the editors. The first published outcome of my current project on the cultural history of obeah, this traces representations of Jack Mansong aka Three-Fingered Jack from his 'real' history as a Jamaican escaped slave and bandit to his representations on the London stage, in fiction, and more recently on stage and in public memory in Jamaica. The other essays in the annual are by literary scholars and this will take an interdisciplinary approach influenced by literary studies, but might be useful for showing versatility and the current direction of my work.
