This chapter discusses protocol analysis and its prior and potential employment in accounting research. It places the method within its epistemological context and reviews the principal ways in which it has been employed by accounting researchers who have sought to dissect and understand the behavioural and cognitive aspects of accounting expertise. Finally, the chapter discusses method issues and then examines limitations, developments and future research opportunities.
