Application of a shape memory alloy in a smart thermal clutch or brake

The use of a shape memory alloy sensor in a novel emergency brake is described. Tests on a prototype unit fitted to a conveyer roller show that it is capable of bringing the roller rapidly to rest should a bearing overheat. The basic design can be used to provide a very cheap emergency brake with a high torque capacity and requires no electrical power to hold the brake in the off condition.
