It is shown that the bit error rate performance of bit-interleaved turbo-coded modulations can be optimised by using carefully selected M-ary signal constellations. When the parameter M is in the form M=2/sup 2p/ where p is an integer, the use of rectangular QAM constellations leads to optimal performance. (7 References).
