Abstract

This paper discusses a new project that investigates the application of genetic programming to the generation of index term weighting schemes and document-query similarity measures for information retrieval. Despite the large number of existing schemes and measures that have been proposed, it is argued that varied and changing retrieval contexts justify the search for new methods. Preliminary work on the Cystic Fibrosis reference collection is described.
