Design of reinforced fill systems to support footings overlying cavities

Abstract

Footings are often laid on formations that include undetected, and sometimes not yet formed, cavities. The use of geosynthetics to mitigate the consequences of the formation of such cavities during the lifetime of the structure provides an appealing solution to the problem. The problem of footings on reinforced fill overlying cavities is one in which the foundation-geosynthetic-fill interaction has to be properly addressed and modelled for a realistic solution to be reached. Whilst the problems of footings on reinforced fill, footings on cavity bearing ground, and reinforced fill overlying cavity bearing ground have each been separately addressed by researchers, no attempt has been made to provide solutions for the problem of footings on reinforced fill, footings on cavity bearing ground, and reinforced fill systems overlying cavities. This paper presents the results of a systematic parametric continuum analysis study that was carried out to study this problem using a range of typical values for the problem governing parameters. The results are presented in simple charts that aid the engineer in estimating the expected settlements and geosynthetic tension for different conditions.
