One of the most important tasks considering an automatic fingerprint recognition system is the minutiae biometric pattern extraction from the captured image of the fingerprint. Due to imperfections of the acquired image, in some cases certain minutiae can be missed by the extraction algorithm and in others spurious minutiae can be inserted. We describe the design and implementation of an automatic fingerprint recognition system. The proposed method uses improving alternatives for the image enhancement process, leading consequently to an increase of the reliability in the minutiae extraction task. (8 References).
