Abstract

The DERIDASC project is examining whether translation of an argument from an informal to a formal representation can really increase confidence in it. Critical Thinking argues for the reconstruction of textual arguments into a logical form for further analysis. The approach involves the reverse engineering of the premises, the final conclusion, and any intermediate conclusions of the argument into a format similar to that found in formal proofs: numbered premises lead to numbered conclusions. This paper is a self-application of Critical Thinking to some problematic passages in an introductory text Critical Thinking by Bowell and Kemp. The paper is an experiment in deconstructive close reading.
