This paper explores the possibilities and implications of spatial representation using virtual reality (VR) tools. Concepts of VR and its linkages with cartography are examined and the non-deterministic nature of VR as a data exploration tool is discussed. The use of the Virtual Reality Modelling Language (VRML) is introduced and a project to employ conventional map data in a VRML "virtual world" is described. Further technical issues related to the use of VRML are mentioned. © 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
