Abstract

In the last twenty years, academic research has produced over one hundred new converter topologies for induction motor drives applications, each one claiming advantages over its predecessors. Industry, on the other hand, has been relatively slow to exploit resonant techniques. The reasons for this include misleading literature, poor experiences with one topology or simply a lack of accurate information in an easily digestible form. This paper addresses all of these issues by presenting an overview and a comparison of the most important three-phase voltage-fed resonant converter topologies in the power range IkW to 800kW. The most appropriate topologies for induction motor drives are identified.
