The 27Al triple-quantum MAS spectrum of an amorphous sol-gel precursor of 2:1 type mullite has been compared to those of crystalline 2:1 type mullite and andalusite. For the 2:1 type mullite and its precursor three peaks were observed. The true isotropic chemical shifts and the composite quadrupolar parameters were determined. The structural significance of the central peak in the spectrum of the precursor material is discussed in the context of the well-known structures of the two other crystalline phases. © 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd.
