Optimal design and control of agricultural materials handling and processing machinery is currently constrained by a lack of data on the internal dynamics of the materials in response to contact with machine surfaces. There is a demand for models which couple the dynamics of agricultural machinery and the mechanical behavior of the material being processed. In this paper we describe a method for modeling the dynamic behavior of agricultural and food particulars such as soil, grains, fruit, vegetables and food products during handling and processing using actual machine geometry and kinematics. The paper elaborates on a method for coupling machine surface geometry with discrete element models and describes how arbitrary translation and rotation of machine surfaces is achieved. An example simulation showing the lifting of grains from a hopper using a screw is presented and possible methods for generating the kinematics of machine surfaces for use in the discrete element model by coupling with a rigid body dynamics model of the machinery are discussed.
