The subcellular localization of β-oxidation of fatty acids in plants has been the subject of controversy for many years. Peroxisomes have been accepted as the sole site of fatty acid β-oxidation for the past 15 years, whilst a proposed dual location, in both mitochondria and peroxisomes, has been disputed. Accumulated evidence demonstrating mitochondrial β-oxidation now demands that a dual location for plant β-oxidation must be considered.
