Abstract

The mobility of 3He+ in 3He has been calculated at 2 and 4.35 K for E/N values up to 30 Td, where E denotes the electric field strength, N is the gas number density and 1 Td is 10-21 V m2. The best available potentials and kinetic theory have been employed and full account has been taken of the nuclear spin statistics. At the same temperature and E/N value, the results differed by no more than 5% from those for 4He+ in 4He when scaled by the square root of the mass ratios for the two systems. For 4He+ in 4He, comparison with recent measurements at 4.3 K by Tanuma et al shows agreement to within 6% for E/N values up to 15 Td.
