This article takes the form of a critical appraisal of what is traditionally considered to be one of the most important concepts in the teaching and learning of number in primary school: place value. A consideration of the concept from a variety of perspectives suggests that the concept is too sophisticated for many young children to grasp. Recent research findings on the range of mental calculation strategies used by children for two-digit addition and subtraction and some of the recommendations of the National Numeracy Strategy Framework for Teaching Mathematics from Reception to Year 6 are discussed. The conclusion drawn is that there is a need for a reappraisal of the teaching of place value in primary school.
