Agri-environment schemes afford a principal instrument for achieving a more ecologically diverse farming landscape. Their uptake, effectiveness and efficiency are influenced by a number a economic principles. After discussing these principles, the lessons learned from a decade and a half of agri-environment policy are considered in terms of public expenditure, the search for benefits and various other issues. Research needs and policy options are reviewed.
