A fully instrumented power circulating test rig is described for the study of the dynamic behaviour of large gears. The circulating torque can be varied while the rig is in operation. Instrumentation is provided for measuring dynamic transmission error, dynamic bearing force variation, vibration levels, mesh alignment and the orbits of the shafts within their bearings. The rig has a maximum pinion speed of 6000 r/min and a maximum power of 8 MW. Typical results are presented.
