Recent advances in electrochemical ellipsometry and in situ FTIR are reviewed; in particular the progress made by each technique in the key areas of spatial and time resolution are discussed, and the new types of information derived from the study of particulate electrodes are also summarised. Two important topics: oxidation of methanol and growth and cycling of electroactive films are both covered in more detail using recent results from the authors' laboratory and elsewhere. © 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd.
