Abstract

In this paper, a procedure to predict the extreme wave-induced loads and to assess the ultimate strength of a turret moored FPSO vessel is described. The wave-induced loads are determined using a linear frequency domain procedure as well as time domain calculations accounting for the nonlinearities coming from hydrostatic, hydrodynamics and mooring effects. The results based on both methods are then compared to the rule based empirical formulas. The ultimate strength assessment of the vessel is carried out using Lloyd Register's LR.PASS program. A simplified procedure to predict the non-linear loading is discussed. This procedure could enhance the reliability of a linear assessment which cannot account for non-linear effects.
