Arc welding has been used for 50 years as the main joining process in shipbuilding. The basics have not changed, but processes and tools have evolved and improved. There has also been a steady move from manual to mechanised, and more recently to automatic and even robotic welding. This article assesses current welding status and highlights some new and emerging welding processes and ancillary equipment for shipbuilding applications. Alternative joining methods including laser welding, friction stir welding, and use of adhesives are described.
