A set of new ab initio potentials were produced to investigate the convergence and reliability of the scattering length for spin-polarized metastable helium. In addition, a dummy basis set which introduces a spurious behavior in the potential was demonstrated and should thus be avoided for the estimation of global observables like the scattering length. It was shown that a semiclassical analysis of the scattering length calculation have a huge sensitivity which was related to the action integral going through a critical value for the appearance of the fifteenth vibrational level, where a divergence occurs in the scattering length.
