The interaction of a Rydberg electron with a ground-state atom was studied by using the Fermi approximation theory. Extensive comparisions were performed with ab initio calculations for 1∑+ and 3∑+ states of LiH and H2 for upto the ninth state of a specified symmetery. The Fermi model was shown to yield a physically sound diabatic approach for excited states of diatomic molecules.
