Abstract

The National Guideline Support and Research Unit is funded by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence to support the development of national clinical guidelines in England and Wales. The role of the unit is to advise on technical issues, train and support those involved in guideline development, undertake methodological research and develop guidelines in support of these activities. National guidelines will have to marry concepts of efficiency, equity and choice. Their recommendations will have to be informative, robust and feasible to clinicians and patients. It is important that stakeholders understand national guideline development processes, taking the full opportunity to contribute and thus enhancing the product. In the next two years the unit will develop primary care guidelines for the management of hypertension and dyspepsia.
