This paper reports on a study that has been carried out into the flow fields induced by mean and oscillatory flows incident on porous plates normal to the flow. The motivation for this work is the possibility of using porous plates to modify the damping and added mass of bodies floating in waves with a view to reducing their motion. A series of experiments including sea keeping experiments, flow visualization experiments and numerical simulations have been carried out for both solid plate and porous plates in the context of their effectiveness as bilge keels designed to damp the motions of floating structures. The porous plate with small size holes has been shown to be a more efficient damping device more often than the solid one. Both plates produce a pressure drag arising from flow separation that damps the motion, but the proportion of drag to total force is greater in the case of the porous plate.
