On the origin of galactic magnetic fields

Abstract

We discuss the properties of the large-scale galactic magnetic fields which can help to discriminate between theories of their origin. We argue that the mean-field dynamo theory in its simplest form is unique in that it can explain most of the known features from a single conceptual viewpoint.
