This paper outlines the basic areas of work needed to write a successful grant application, the timetable you need to work to and the issues that most often cause problems. It is vital to read the background literature thoroughly and allow plenty of time, both to develop your protocol and for your application to be processed. Power calculations are essential at an early stage. Costing the study needs good quality information to ensure that all aspects have been fully covered. As a rule it is better to overestimate costs rather than the reverse. © 2002 Harcourt Publishers Ltd.
