The concepts of silicon-surface modification for integration with DNA oligomers and the properties of DNA itself were analyzed. The majority of silicon-DNA surfaces are in fact silicon-silica DNA, where automated solid-phase DNA synthesis based on phosphoramidite chemistry has been conducted. To perform DNA synthesis it is necessary to prepare monolayer surfaces that present a terminal primary alcohol group. The recent development provides a platform on which to exploit the increasing number of methods for DNA-based nano-constructions.
