This is a report on a long-term study conducted as a post-graduate research study by the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, England under sponsorship that included European Community funding. The project aim waste to collect data on the characteristics of two types of coatings, a foul release type antifouling paint and a tin-free SPC coating and compare the results. The text is illustrated with screenshots of a graphical interpretation of the collected data, one showing roughness of the tin-free SPC sample, the other roughness of a foul release surface. The foul release system confers lower drag than the tin-free system with differences in frictional resistance varying between 2 and 23%. A recent trend toward the application of foul release paint to ships propellers as well as hulls is revealed. The motive is to achieve an efficiency increase of between 3 and 6% for the propeller.
