Abstract

The crystal structure for three new sulfonyloxiranes was reported. The structures provided evidence of the existence of a generalized anomeric effect in 2-phenylsulfonyloxiranes accounting for the substantial bond asymmetry in the oxirane ring. The observations also accounted for the reactivity of the oxiranes towards nucleophiles.
