Abstract

The work in this show extended research into site specific painting funded by the then AHRB and the British School at Rome in 2000. These drawings investigated how differently scaled elements could offset each others' readings within a broadly landscape based series of works, and drew on influences from early renaissance painting to comic books. For this exhibition I presented 10 drawings in watercolour, ink and acrylic, each 4' x 5', alongside paintings made directly onto the walls of the gallery. Whilst the main wall painting was in a fairly conventional square format (approx 12' x 12'), there were elements of the wall painting which were less formal, 'suspended' from the ceiling, creeping around corners etc. o Contemporary Art Gallery in the East End of London has also showed work by Artlab, Matt Hale, Julie Verhoeven, Gavin Turk, Fiona Banner, Andrew Grassie. o Works from this solo show were presented at art fairs in Chicago + Turin (Mobile Home Gallery) and Bologna (Galeria Alessandra Bonomo). o Reviewed: 100 reviews II, worldwidereview.com. Poster / Invite. This exhibition resulted in three further shows based on the same series of works o The bird from my mouth Solo Exhibition, Artlab, Imperial College London Solo Exhibition with works from this series alongside earlier postcard paintings o Inside Out, Investigating Drawing Group Exhibition, Milton Keynes Gallery, an exhibition curated by Stephen Snoddy looking at how contemporary artists are using drawing. With Jack Duplock, Lawrence Elliott, Stephen Groom, Andrew Mania, Jamie Shovlin, Mari Sunna, Julie Verhoeven.
