Abstract

A study of New Labour's attitudes toward Europe reveals that the 'European question' has not been about whether or not to become European, but about what it means to be British. In this ongoing European debate, we have found two main narratives of Labour Party Britishness-imperial or transcontinental nationalism, and Euro-nationalism. Despite their differences, we show how each of these inherently spatial narratives, along with their corresponding cultural and temporal components, depends upon constructions of greatness and difference for its conception of national identity.
