Abstract

The use of telematics-based technologies to supply public transport in areas of low demand is discussed. The development of telematics-based booking systems enable the scheduling of more journeys closer to the time of travel. Telematics-based systems are based upon vehicle route organization via a Travel Dispatch Center (TDC) using software to assign passengers to vehicles and optimize the routes. These systems are used in the Phone and Go project and the services are dispatched from the Transport Operations Research Group (TORG) TDC, using the mobile data software MobiRouter5to manage and design DRT services for Northumberland County Council in UK.
